The Benefits of Cycle Syncing for Doulas: Enhancing Energy, Intuition, and Well-Being
Feb 05, 2025
Hey doula sis! Today I want to talk about something that could be a total game-changer for your energy, your work, and your well-being: cycle syncing.
As doulas, we give so much of ourselves—physically, emotionally, mentally. We hold space for others, we show up at all hours, and we pour love into our clients. It’s beautiful work, but it can also be draining if we don’t take care of ourselves. That’s where cycle syncing comes in.
Now before we dive in, please note that cycle syncing is not for everyone. If the process of this practice makes you feel more stressed or overwhelmed, step back! You can always try and cycle sync at a time in your life that works for you. Just do it befoer menopause of course!
WTF is Cycle Syncing Anyway?
Cycle syncing is basically the practice of aligning what you do—your work, your movement, your rest—with the natural phases of your menstrual cycle. Instead of pushing through exhaustion or wondering why you feel off some days, you start working with your body instead of against it. And trust me, once you start paying attention to this, it’s a total game-changer.
Breaking Down the Four Phases
So, let’s get into the nitty-gritty. Your cycle has four phases, and each one brings its own vibe.
Menstrual Phase (Days 1-5): The Rest + Reflect Phase
This is when your period starts, and your body is like, “Hey babe, let’s slow down.” Energy is at its lowest, and honestly, this is the best time for rest, reflection, and deep self-care. If you can, try to keep your schedule light during this time—catch up on notes, do some journaling, maybe book fewer births if possible - again IF possible! Always give yourself permission to take it easy in this stage, you deserve it.
Follicular Phase (Days 6-14): The Get-Things-Done Phase
Typically in this phase, your energy starts coming back, creativity is flowing, and you’re feeling more motivated. This is the perfect time to start new projects, plan workshops, or meet with potential clients. It’s also a great time for workouts that require more energy—think brisk walks, yoga, or even strength training.
Ovulatory Phase (Days 15-17): The Social Butterfly Phase
Listen up love - this is your peak energy moment. You’re feeling confident, social, and sharp—so it’s a great time for consultations, teaching classes, and those births that require extra stamina. If you’ve been meaning to have big conversations (like advocating for a client or negotiating with a hospital), this is the time to do it.
Luteal Phase (Days 18-28): The Wind-Down Phase
Your body is starting to slow down, and you might feel a little more introverted. Use this time to wrap up projects, follow up with clients, and get some quiet self-care in. If you start feeling irritated or overwhelmed, that’s your cue to pull back and not overcommit. Your body is asking for a little extra grace.
Why Does This Matter for Doulas?
In the first 2 years of my practice, I did not use cycle syncing, even though I was regularly tracking my cycle. I knew about it, but the thought of having to track and coordinate at the time was too much. But once I started the implement it into my routine, my business actually started to flow with me and I felt much more confident in my work! Here's a few things to consider once you start:
1. You’ll Have More Energy (and Less Burnout)
Instead of pushing yourself through exhaustion, you’ll learn when to lean in and when to rest. No more guilt for needing a slower day!
2. You’ll Be More in Tune with Your Clients
As doulas we are already super intuitive! But when you start syncing with your cycle, you’ll notice you’re even more aware of your emotions and energy shifts. This helps you be fully present for your clients without feeling drained.
3. Your Business Will Thrive
Planning workshops, networking, social media content—this all becomes so much easier when you do it in the phases where your brain and energy naturally want to do it. Like me writing this blog right now! I'm on day 6 btw :-)
4. You’ll Feel More Balanced Overall
Cycle syncing is really about honoring where you are at any given time. WE ARE CYCLICAL BEINGS! Instead of forcing productivity or ignoring exhaustion, you start flowing with your body. It’s honestly life-changing and I hope this inspires you to give it a try.
Now I know, TRUST ME I kNOW—it’s not always possible to perfectly schedule your doula life around your cycle. Births don’t wait for follicular energy, and sometimes you’ll have to show up even when you’re deep in the luteal please-don’t-talk-to-me phase. But even small shifts—like adjusting your self-care, planning projects at the right time, and giving yourself grace—can make a huge difference.
So, what do you think? Have you ever tried cycle syncing? I’d love to hear how it’s worked (or could work) for you! Interested in learning more about your cycle or want to attend a workshop? Let’s chat. 💜
